I began my OT career at a large trauma hospital, in Dallas, TX, USA, where I specialized in the treatment of clients with neurological disorders. While at this hospital I learned about the specialty of hand therapy and enjoyed learning from the hand therapy OT team whenever possible. In 1991 I was selected by the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to serve as an OT in Armenia, USSR, where I served on a rehab team and trained local students to work as rehab therapists on a spinal cord unit staffed by an interdisciplinary team of expatriates. After my 6 month term in Armenia, I accepted a position in St. Louis, MIssouri where I began working as a hand therapist. I worked as a hand therapist in Missouri for 6 years before moving to back to Texas. I started two different hand therapy clinics in Texas, prior to accepting my current position as Senior Certified Hand Therapist, Clinical OT Education Coordinator and Hand Therapy Fellowship Director at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.
I served on the Board of Directors for the American Society of Hand Therapy (ASHT), including the following positions: Education Division Director (2007), Vice President (2008), President Elect (2009), Presient (2010), and Immediate Past President (2011). Prior to my ASHT service I served for several years on the Board of Directors for the Texas Chapter of ASHT, holding the positions of Vice President and President. In addition to my membership in ASHT, I am a member of the American Occupational Therapy Association and the Texas Society of Hand Therapists. I have served as IFSHT Treasurer since 2013.
I have presented on a state and national level on various hand therapy topics, including presentations at the American Society of Hand Therapy Annual Meeting, an Electives course offered by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for Hand Surgery
I am part of the faculty and teach an annual lecture series on the Wrist and Hand for the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital (HMSLH) Physical Therapy Orthopedic and Sports Residency Program. I also lecture regularly as a part of the faculty for the HMSLH Hand Therapy Fellowship Program.
