The Hand Therapy pathways are aimed at qualified Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists working in the field of Hand Therapy. Modules are predominantly distance learning (with the exception of injection therapy) building upon core hand therapy skills to advance practice, including soft tissue and joint injection therapy, medication advice within rehabilitation, advanced musculoskeletal (MSK) assessment, current concepts in upper limb rehabilitation, service development and research. There is a high emphasis on evidence based practice and clinicians have the opportunity of completing a quality improvement project with support to embed this into local practice.
Multiprofessional learning and sharing of diverse skills and experience is encouraged to support personal and professional development. Most of the modules are studied through distance learning delivered over an online platform with live interactive lectures, case discussions and activities. Tutors are from a range of clinical backgrounds including Physiotherapy, Hand Therapy, and with a special interest in Rheumatology and Ultrasound.
There is flexibility to study at an individuals own pace on a part-time basis, whilst most clinicians study within a pathway (PGCert, PGDip, MSc), some choose to study standalone modules which suit their personal needs and practice. Clinicians studying the MSc pathway will undertake a research project at the end of their study, supported by experienced researchers. The MSc pathway aligns with the four pillars of advanced practice (clinical, education, leadership, research).
Successful completion of the PGCert awards the clinician British Association of Hand Therapists (BAHT) points enabling application for recognition as an Accredited Hand Therapist (alongside an extended CV and clinical hours log). An Overseas Accredited Hand Therapist award can also be achieved if the clinician is a BAHT member but working outside the UK. See the BAHT website for further details.
